Wearing mascara can be a minefield of potential irritation for people with sensitive eyes, but that doesn’t mean you have to give up on gorgeous, fluttery lashes.
From application, to removal, to choosing the right mascara, there are many different things you can do to prevent sore, irritated eyes.
Green People UK has put together five easy and effective tips on mascara for sensitive eyes, helping you to get beautifully defined lashes without the irritation.
1. Avoid waterproof mascara
It’s not just the extra chemicals that can cause sensitive eyes to react to a waterproof mascara. The extra effort required to remove waterproof mascara can irritate the delicate eye area and even cause damage to your lashes, leading to breakage or lashes falling out.
Green People’s natural water-repellent mascara is far easier to remove and requires less rubbing. It doesn’t contain any harsh water-proofing ingredients that may cause irritation for people with sensitive eyes.
2. Try a natural mascara
Sensitive eyes need a gentle mascara that doesn’t contain harsh chemicals. Green People’s award-winning natural mascara is gentle on your eyes and gives beautiful, long-lasting volume and length.
Made with natural vitamin E and plant oils, it nourishes and plumps out lashes to make them look thicker and fuller.
Beeswax lightly coats your lashes to provide a water-resistant, long-lasting finish that doesn’t smudge throughout the day. Intense natural mineral pigments provide buildable colour for a subtle daytime or dramatic evening lash look.
3. Coat the tips and not the roots
Despite advice from beauty gurus to apply your mascara as close to the lash roots as possible, this can be very irritating for sensitive eyes.
Use your mascara wand to coat the middle and tips of your lashes, using a zigzag motion and avoiding the roots, this will prevent mascara from irritating the delicate skin around your eyes.
As well as preventing soreness, this technique of mascara application creates naturally lengthened lashes that don’t look clumpy or overloaded with product: it’s a win-win!
4. Remove gently and thoroughly
The most important tip of all is to completely remove ALL of your mascara. Sleeping in your eye make-up can dry out the skin around your eyes, making them more susceptible to irritation and soreness. As well as this, small amounts of mascara can flake off the lashes and enter your eye as you sleep, causing red, uncomfortable eyes come morning.
It is also damaging for your eyelashes to leave mascara on overnight, so to keep your natural lashes full, thick and long, proper removal is key.
Before you go to bed, use a natural, alcohol-free eye make-up remover, such as Green People’s Scent-Free Cleanser & Make-up Remover, to thoroughly wipe away mascara before cleansing the rest of your face.
5. Change your mascara every 3 months
This is a tip for everyone, but it is especially important for those with sensitive eyes. Your mascara can harbour bacteria so it is advisable to regularly replace it.
Most mascaras will have a use by date of around 6 months from opening, however make-up artists recommend throwing out mascaras after 2-3 months.
It is also important not to share your mascara with friends as this can pass on bacteria and even infections. If you do need to share, use a disposable wand and don’t double dip!
